I have dated with several Cambodian men. However, it has never gone further than being a boyfriend and girlfriend. There are 10 reasons that Cambodian men don't consider me as their future wife.
1. Marriage Isn't For Me: I never wanted to get married to any men. I saw marriage as a trap. I noticed that the reasons people around me, especially women got married are for parents/family, dowry, title in the society, making kids, reputation, money, materials, serving a husband, avoiding being called as an "old maid" and so on. Basically, I didn't value marriage and it's not for me.
2. I Had A Bad Image Of Family Life: I have seen my parents were fighting every single day. My mother told me that's because of me. I felt so guilty of being the cause of their flight. My parents complained a lot that I was a burden for them. I was beaten by my mother for eighteen years and I had a bad image of motherhood. Sometimes, I was afraid that I would be like mother and I would hate myself for being like her.
3. I Did Not Want To Have Kids: I liked kids, yet I never thought about having my own kids. I am traumatized by what I was living in my childhood. I was afraid that I could do what my mother did to me to my kids. Seven years ago, a Cambodian guy I dated with asked me to get married because he wanted to have kids. I answered 'No, I don't want to have kids!'. And because I wouldn't get married to have kids or to fulfill his desire. He replied to me "You are not normal. Every woman wants to have kids." After this conversation, we were separated.
4. I Am Not Shy: Cambodian men like a timid woman who is silent and acting properly following Chbab Srey (code of conduct for women). I'm too brave for Cambodian men. I talk and behave freely. Some of my male friends who were close to me said that I am not a woman. Meaning, I could only be their friend. That's also because they can talk to me anything like their buddy.
5. I Am Independent: Being independent doesn't make a Cambodian husband happy, but a headache. If a woman is able to stand her own two feet, she would be difficult to dominate. Cambodian men prefer a woman who asks for being supported to make them feel like a man and powerful. Most Cambodian men don't want a woman like me to be their wife because they're afraid that I would turn my nose up at seeing their value.
6. I Don't Cook: I could do things in the kitchen. However, I never like to cook. My grandmother and my mother always told me that if I don't know how to cook, no guy wants to marry me. I relaxingly answered "Well, I don't want to be a wife!". They were just pissed off with me.
7. I Am Not Virgin: Women that Cambodian men have sex with can be virgin or not isn't important. But a woman who will become their wife has to be 'virgin'. When I was 19, my parents forced me to get married to a man that I never knew or met before. I stopped them from compelling me getting married to a stranger by saying that "I had sex with my boyfriends, and I'm not virgin." They were shocked by this news and they said that I was a slut. They added that they would cancel the marriage proposal because I was not virgin and it's shameful for them. I actually was happy that I don't need to get married to a stranger. But I was unhappy that my parents value virginity and called their daughter very inappropriately.
8. I Know A Lot About Sex: Compared to many Cambodian women, I know a lot about sex. I was curious about sex and reproduction in a very early age. In Cambodia, sex education is included in academic study in secondary school (13 years old). Talking about sex is a taboo. Even the teachers were not descriptive when he/she gave the lectures. In order to fulfill my curiosity, I joined several courses about sex an reproductive health with some non-governmental organisations that worked in this field. Besides, I have sex experience that makes me confident in bed. Cambodian men don't like when a woman isn't shy in bed.
9. My Appearance Is Not Their Type: Brown skin, flat nose, slim body... No, it isn't Cambodian men's taste. They prefer white skin, sharp nose and chubby. I'm not a Cambodian beauty standard for Cambodian men. Cambodian people in general like being chunky because that looks rich and healthy. When you're slim, you look poor and unhealthy. It also means you don't eat enough.
I think that I am not a type of women that Cambodian men consider to marry with because I have always been who I am.

Hi. All these stereotypes can be destroyed at one moment when such an independent girl will be able to meet a normal young man. Now there are a lot of opportunities for this, because even people in adulthood can find their love, as I recently had on this wonderful dating site https://www.maturetenders.com/ . You just don't need to pay attention to any conventions and prejudices, but trust your feelings and strive for your dream in life.
