Almost all gamers love the continuation of their favorite game, but not all developers are able to competently continue their own story. It is difficult to say “stop” in time, especially if the series is profitable. In this collection, we recall the most disastrous sequels of our favorite episodes.

The project went off and Serious Sam caught the attention of the gaming community. First of all, with their fresh ideas and ironic approach to everything, starting with the image of the main character.
 
This is the atmosphere that I remember in the first part.
Sam was a kind of improved version of Duke Nukem from the game of the same name, the image for which was created back in 1991. Cynical, cold-blooded and utterly unwavering. To mow down hundreds of monsters with a machine gun and rocket launcher, nerves of steel are a must.
Croteam was encouraged by the success of the first part. And either the developers were tired of the original style, or the Croats wanted to introduce gamers to a new look at Sam. But the second part has changed dramatically.
Not such a continuation gamers expected from the second part ...
The jungle has replaced the authentic Egyptian and Greek locations, and not to say that realistic. Instead of a warm, realistic color palette and filters - deliberate "cartoony" and a hint of cell-shading. Enemies also began to look like ridiculous cartoon characters, and in a bad performance. All of this killed the atmosphere of the first Serious Sam. Of course, the series' signature tricks in the form of humor and some enemies remained, but this was not enough not to disappoint gamers.
By 2020, the developers have corrected and returned the atmosphere, making it the way it should be.
By the third and fourth parts about the adventures of Cool Sam, Croteam returned to their main formula "brutal-humor-dismemberment" and, in general, leveled the series, although many gamers still have some questions for the third part. But compared to the failed and experimental second part, it can even be called good. Keep it up, Croteam!
 

Dead Space 3 (2013)

The 2010s can be called one of the best eras in the gaming industry, which was marked by the emergence of several dozen new franchises, including Dead Space - a space horror that follows in the footsteps of Doom 3. At least it was positioned this way from the first commercials.
The original Dead Space was able to scare
The launch of the new tile was successful. Players appreciated the dark atmosphere of Dead Space. The game did not bring a new word to the genre, but the developers added a unique system of enemy weaknesses. Each enemy at the abandoned Ishimura station demanded a special approach to battle. Someone needed to chop off their heads, others did not calm down until the main character deprived the ill-wisher of the legs.
It seems that by the third part, the developers sacrificed depth for the sake of entertainment
The second part of Dead Space 2 followed in the footsteps of the original, but the release of the third part caused bewilderment among many gamers. The game moved away from the horror canons, along with this, the oppressive atmosphere, which was one of the hallmarks of the project, disappeared. Dead Space 3 isn't a bad game. But in the weather behind the spectacle, the developers abandoned their original ideas. This resulted in the release of a pass-through action movie without a hint of replay.
 

Mass Effect Andromeda (2017)

The original Mass Effect trilogy has already made history in the gaming industry. The first part of the franchise, released from under the Bioware wing, immediately attracted the attention of gamers. By tradition, the plot has become the strongest point of the project. Mass Effect marked the beginning of a new space opera, on the scale of George Lucas's Star Wars.
The release of the second part was not long in coming. Mass Effect 2 was a clever bug fix. It became more convenient to play, and I wanted more and more to follow the fate of humanity, which is destined to fall under the yoke of the reapers. ME2 is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Bioware's creativity. For the third part of the franchise, expectations were high, because the developers promised to complete the storyline for Mass Effect 3.
Five years after the release of the third part of Mass Effect, the developers decided to revive the franchise, but with a new story and characters. During this time, the standards for graphics in the industry have changed slightly, so the developers decided to transfer the game to the new Frostbyte engine (also used in the Battlefield series).
Mass Effect: Andromeda can be called a good game, but in isolation from the original trilogy
Graphically, the game has really changed. The picture has become more detailed and modern. The same can be said for game mechanics. The weapon felt better in the hands, there was a more understandable recoil from the barrels. The only controversial point was facial animation. But the frankly weak part of Mass Effect Andromeda was its plot.
What formed the basis of the previous trilogy became the Achilles heel for ME: Andromeda. The characters became faded, the dialogues boring and inexpressive, and it became not interesting to follow the development of the story. By the time this sequel was developed, many key employees had left the company, including screenwriter Drew Karpishin. From the former space opera, a faded film-style narrative from category B remains.
 
Graphically, the game is even closer to realism, and this is one of the strengths of the fourth part

But, if you look at Mass Effect Andromeda in isolation from the original part, then gamers got a good futuristic third-person action movie with cute graphics, a basic RPG system and an interesting story, albeit missing stars from the sky. But the olds, as they say, remember.
 

Doom Eternal (2020)

The 2016 relaunch of the Doom franchise is a success. The developers at id Software decided to go back to their roots, abandon the slow, measured gameplay, as it was in Doom 3, and give players more dynamics, monsters and adrenaline. It turned out very well.
Doom 2016 picked up the pace, and the game began to look more like meat shooters in the style of the same Serious Sam. The new system of finishing off enemies not only made the game more spectacular, but also motivated players to kill monsters in hand-to-hand combat. For this, gamers received not only a spectacular fatality, but also health capsules. This approach gave rise to new game mechanics, which sometimes forced gamers to rush into the thick of the battle in the hope of finishing off one of the demons, replenish their health and continue the battle.

The Doom Eternal announcement sparked a wave of excitement. The developers have promised to add a double-barreled gun, a grappling hook, new monsters and even more bloody finishing moves. Technically, id Software delivered on its promise, but for some reason players did not welcome Doom Eternal with the same warmth as it was in the case of Doom 2016, and there are several reasons for this.
In the bloodlust, the game does not hold
It seems that at one point, Bethesda's management decided to overhaul the concept of Doom Eternal. In the era of games-services, the usual 12-15 hour playthrough does not suit investors. The new Doom has added more in-game secrets, created a separate spaceship location to which players will return after completing each level, and also multiplied the number of bonuses dropped from enemies. Want to get some armor? Please fire the nearest demon with a flamethrower. Here's a freezing grenade, here's a chainsaw.
In words, everything looks good. But in reality, the players faced a catastrophic shortage of ammunition, because of which any battle turned into a constant running after weak monsters (imps and zombies) in search of the coveted ammunition and health. With such crazy dynamics, it was possible to empty the clips of your favorite cannon in just 20 seconds. In visual terms, everything also went towards a more angular and sometimes cartoonish picture.
Recently, ray tracing support has been added to the game.
The amount of ammunition that fell from enemies literally turned the butchering of monsters into some kind of rainbow fountain of their special effects. Lost seriousness. For some reason, the developers added platforming, which looked strange in a bloody shooter.
Doom Eternal was not an outright flop, scoring 88 out of 100 on the Metacritic rating aggregator. But criticism from gamers suggests that id Software has turned in the wrong direction. The game lost itself in the midst of new and not always necessary mechanics that distracted from the main idea of ​​the meat shooter: run and shoot.
 

Resident Evil 6 (2012)

The beginning of the Resident Evil series fell on the golden age of horror. Then this genre was just beginning to emerge, and the developers did not know the laws and did not understand how to do these horror movies. Capcom found its vision by creating one of the most famous Resident Evil franchises. The last part in the face of Resident Evil: Village was released in April 2021.
The first four parts of RE were canon horror films. Unhurried, with a minimum of light and a maximum of suspense. Developers were rolling out their favorite game mechanics and plot twists, and by the time Resident Evil 4 was released, the franchise was at its peak. But for the release of the fifth part, something went wrong.
For those who want to plunge into the world of "Resident Evil", you should familiarize yourself with the entire retrospective of the series.
Capcom got tired of self-copying and decided to refresh the series with a new setting. The scene of the fifth part was moved to Africa, but there are no serious complaints about the game, but RE 6 raised many questions.
The feeling of fear disappeared in the game, a sane and interesting plot was gone, and the game itself was torn apart in a heap of controversial level design decisions. In the end, it turned out not scary, not interesting and does not look like a typical representative of Resident Evil. This is evidenced by the extremely low sales of the sixth part. Fortunately, for the release of the next parts of the Capcom franchise, they corrected and returned the series to the mainstream of horror.
