In general, Cisco offers 3 levels of certification. Associate, Professional, and Expert levels. The first level of the Cisco certification system is the entry-level, which starts with the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification as an intermediate step to the Associate level or leads directly to the CCNA and CCDA certifications.

The second level is the Associate level, which consists of CCNA certification and CCDA certification.

Cisco Professional certifications such as the CCNP certification are considered proof of competency in handling medium-sized networks (between 100 and 500 endpoints) and QoS, broadband, VPN and security awareness. The CCDP certification is an advanced network design certification offered by Cisco Systems. The expert level certification is the Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE). It is the highest level of professional certification offered by Cisco. As of April 6, 2008, there were 16,335 individuals with active CCIE certifications worldwide. There are five active CCIE tracks.
